Silk Fibres
Silk is a natural protein fibre, some forms of which can be woven into textiles. The best-known type of silk is obtained from the cocoons of the larvae of the mulberry silkworm. Silk fibres have been used to create a variety of products for thousands of years due to its softness, strength, and absorbency.
Whilst it is very common in clothing manufacture, it is also prevalent in industrial applications.
These include the manufacture of parachutes, paper, bicycle tires, gunpowder bags, furnishing, and in medicinal and surgical situations.
Silk is also a popular addition to beauty products such as makeup pads to give a soft and luxurious feel and to increase moisture absorbency. It is also high in protein, which is often extracted and added to thickening shampoos and conditioners.
Precision cut silk fibres
Our short cut, high grade silk is suitable for use in a wide range of personal care and beauty applications due to its low level of impurities, extreme softness, and low bulk density. Silk fibres are made up of long protein strands, which give a uniform texture and smooth surface to any material that silk is blended with. For example, silk is often used in lightweight beauty products such as face pads.
We are able to offer silk fibres in the following lengths:
- 1.00 decitex
Milled silk fibres (flock)
Ground silk can be chemically treated to release sericin which is used in the manufacture of cosmetic products.
Used in the same way as wool, our milled silk powder is perfect for protein extraction for enriched hair care products. The liquid formulation uses protein to smooth any hair cells that are damaged or that overlap, helping to leave hair feeling softer and healthier.
We can offer milled silk fibres in the following sizes:
- < 500 microns
