Paper and Nonwovens

Many of our paper fibres are BfR approved, meaning that they can be used in food packaging and medical papers.

We offer a wide range of precision or short cut fibres and flocks which can be used in a wide range of paper applications.

These applications include security papers, decorative wallpapers, and specialist packaging. These fibres can be supplied pre-coloured or neutral, depending on end use and your individual needs.

Natural and synthetic materials are often added to paper and nonwovens to improve strength, chemical resistance, and moisture control.

Paper

We offer a range of short cut fibres and flocks which can be used to manufacture decorative papers, packaging, and technical papers.

Many fibres have a very high dye affinity, making them perfect for use in many applications requiring quality coloured materials. The ability to control length, substrate, and diameter allows you to create bespoke paper characteristics including increased strength, tear resistance, and flexibility/drape. Specialist papers can even be used as a mechanical binder.

The following fibres and flocks are ideal for use in the manufacture of paper:

< 500 microns

Viscose rayon is made using regenerated cellulose fibre. It is a popular material for paper as it has a high lustre and gives the paper a beautiful bright sheen. The fibre also has an exceptional dye affinity making it invaluable for use in speciality papers such as bank notes. As the material is 100% biodegradable, it is used in applications which demand environmental control or by companies who are concerned about their environmental impact. Viscose rayon also improves tear strength properties, such as reinforcing potential failure points/weak spots like corners or edges.

Polyester fibre is a strong and resilient material which adds abrasion resistance and durability to paper products.
It is also resistant to most chemicals and acids, making it perfect for specialist papers that see a lot of wear, such as banknotes.
It is also used to provide excellent wet strength in cellulose based papers, such as for medical drape papers.

< 500 microns

Cotton is increasingly used in paper applications as an alternative to oil based synthetic fibres. It is a strong material that can be used to reinforce and strengthen paper products.

500 – 1000 microns

Polyethylene is strong and flexible, making it a good choice for paper reinforcement. It also is resistant to abrasion, chemicals, and wear, meaning that it is longer lasting than some other materials.

Wallpaper

We manufacture a range of flocks for the production of historic wallpapers. The most common material used in historic wallpapers is wool, which can be produced in sizes from 122 microns to 20mm.

We supply the following materials for Wallpaper:

< 500 microns

Wool is a natural fibre that has been used in textile manufacture for thousands of years. It has good dye affinity and is therefore widely used in the manufacture of high quality carpets and wallpapers.

Nonwovens

Nonwoven materials cover a wide range of everyday items, from medical mesh to filtration systems.

Nonwoven fabric is a fabric-like material made from either short or long fibres which are then bonded together by chemical, mechanical, heat, or solvent treatment.

They can either be single-use or a very durable fabric designed to last a long time. Nonwoven fabrics provide specific benefits such as absorbency, liquid repellency, resilience, stretch, softness, strength, flame retardancy, cushioning, filtering, antibacterial qualities, and sterility.

The following fibres are often used to create nonwoven fabrics:

< 500 microns

As a natural and hypo-allergenic fibre, cotton is the perfect choice for environmentally friendly nonwovens. Nonwoven cotton has excellent absorption properties and also has a high degree of comfort and softness.

Because of this, nonwoven cotton is the preferred material for many application needs including cosmetic wipes, nappies, hygiene products, cleaning wipes, and medical bandages.

< 500 microns

Silk is naturally absorbent and moisture wicking, making it an excellent choice for nonwoven fabrics. It also gives nonwovens a very luxurious feel.

< 500 microns

Wool is a very soft and strong material, and it retains this strength in nonwoven form. However, nonwoven wool is also stiffer and has less drape. It is therefore often used in non-textile applications such as in medical supplies.

PLA nonwovens are a very versatile fabric with uses in many applications. PLA is a biodegradable material, which means it is very popular for single use products. PLA nonwovens are routinely used in medical and protective clothing, surgical gowns, and face masks.

As a biodegradable polymer, PLA retains excellent strength in wet and humid environments and can be cut to short or long precise lengths to offer even strength and porosity control.

Polyester is an incredibly durable material, and its nonwoven form is often used in aggressive environments or in applications that see a lot of wear and tear. For example, nonwoven polyester can be used to manufacture vehicle carpeting due to its strength, resilience, and stain-resistance.

3.3 decitex

Nonwoven polypropylene is routinely used in the manufacture of hard wearing bags, such as bags for life. Polypropylene is water resistant and antibacterial, which means that it is a good choice for items that are expected to last a long time.

2.2 decitex

Nonwoven acrylic is durable, resistant to solvents and chemicals, resistant to heat, and a good insulator. It is often used as a flexible insulator for houses or electrical parts.

2.8 decitex

Viscose rayon nonwovens can offer high absorbency, strength, and lustre to a range of products. For example, their high moisture absorbency means that nonwoven viscose rayon is used in the manufacture of wipes.

It is also biodegrade but available in a range of lengths decitex. This means that it can be tailored to the requirements of an eco-friendly product in terms of strength, flexibility, and durability.
