Paints & Coatings
High performance coatings and surface treatments.
Goonvean Fibres produces a wide selection of raw materials for high performance coatings and paint formulations.
Paint and coating fibres are used for industrial, architectural, and automotive coating applications. Our short cut synthetic and natural fibres, flocks, and powders are used to improve the mechanical and thermal properties of coating products.
These fibres help to make high performance coatings and surface treatments more durable, more resistant to corrosion, and slip-proof.
We specialise in the sourcing and processing of natural and synthetic fibres for a wide range of industries globally, which means that we have a lot of experience and expertise.
In a highly regulated industry such as paints, our clients can rest assured that they are purchasing high quality, sustainably produced materials.

Decorative Coatings and Paints
Decorative paints and coatings are widely used in architectural products.
Fibres and flocks can be added to decorative paints to produce a certain texture or finish. This finish depends on the fibre or material added to it.
The following fibres are available for use in coatings and paints applications:
Anti-sagging, improved crack resistance, viscosity control.
Intermediate Coatings
Intermediate coats are applied to ‘build’ the total film thickness of paints or coatings. This is because the thicker the coating, the longer it lasts. Intermediate coats enhance the overall protection and can even decrease permeability to oxygen and water.
Our fibres for intermediate coatings are:
Multi-system compatible, inert, viscosity control, does not absorb moisture
Marine Paint
Short cut fibres, flocks and powders are used in the manufacture of marine paints to provide anti-corrosion, water resistance and crack bridging in the harshest of environments.
The following materials are suitable for use in marine paint:
Nylon is a very durable and wear-resistant plastic material. It is very flexible and extremely resistant to chemicals and water, making it an ideal material for marine paint. PU paint will have good cracking resistance and will be very long-wearing.
Olive stone is very durable and long lasting. When added to paints, it provides non-slip properties which make ships and boats safer.
Primers and Topcoats
Priming before painting is vital, as primers serve as the foundation for the chosen paint or coating. In some applications, such as metals, primers can help to protect from corrosion and other damage. They help the final coating stick to the surface better, as well as increasing the paint’s durability and hiding or filling in surface scratches and defects.
Topcoats are the last coat and are formulated to give good colour payoff, gloss, and structure to the paint. Topcoats can also add protection from the weather and increase other performance requirements.
The following fibres are regularly used in primer and topcoat type products:
Multi-system compatible, inert, viscosity control, enhances durability, scratch resistance
Fire Resistant Paints
Fire resistant paints are vital in a wide range of industries, from wood fire seals to fire grilles and down lighter covers. Adding fibres with heat resistance to specialist paints and coatings can help to improve fire resistance and control flame spread and fire propagation. In construction applications, such as steel structures, specialist paints can help to keep them below the critical (collapse) temperature in the event of a fire.
Our fibres for fire resistant paints are:
Aramid has extremely high temperature and wear resistance, making them a great choice for fire resistant paint formulations. Aramid fibres are also used by gasket and seal manufacturers for use in aggressive environments.
Acrylic fibre flock is a rigid and durable material used in fire resistant paints for safety reasons and improved coverage.
Acrylic has a high thermal stability and charring properties which can help to prevent the slumping of paints, reduce cracking, and increase fire protection time. This is done by preventing sagging of the intumescent additives & giving even coverage, preventing gaps.
Different quantities of acrylic fibre in fire resistant paint depends on burn time requirement e.g. 5% for 30 minutes and 10% for 60 minutes. This also depends on the other materials in close proximity, i.e. untreated wooden doors will be breached faster than sealed frames.
Modacrylic has very similar properties to acrylic fibres and is also a great choice for flame resistant paints as they are flame retardant and do not combust. Modacrylic fibres are difficult to ignite and will self-extinguish.
Flooring
Since flooring sees a lot of wear and tear on a daily basis, it’s often necessary to use specialist paints and coatings on the floor’s surface to improve durability. These paints and coatings can also improve flexibility, fire resistance, and anti-slip qualities.
The following fibres are regularly used in flooring products:
Fast drying acrylic floor paint is a flexible but resilient coating that is often used for crack bridging where the floor surface is uneven.
Polypropylene (PP) is rugged and unusually resistant to many chemical solvents, bases, and acids making it an ideal material for use in flooring applications.
Modacrylic fibre adds strength, resilience, and dimension stability to flooring. Modacrylic fibres can be easily dyed, show good press and shape retention, and are quick to dry. They have outstanding resistance to chemicals and solvents. As the material is resistant to high temperature and does not burn, it can make flooring safer in case of fire.
Anti-slip Coatings
Goonvean Fibres offers a range of short cut polyethylene, polypropylene and natural powders for use in anti-slip coatings. These are often chosen for their anti-slip properties for use on swimming pools and surroundings, marine paints and ship deck treatments, oil platforms, car park surfaces, and other heavy duty industrial flooring.
Our powders include:
Our polyethylene powders that are commonly used in epoxy resins, varnishes, and paints. Polyethylene can give coatings an anti-slip grip.
Characterised by their controlled particle sizes, polypropylene fibres and powders can help give a uniform texture to flooring finishes.
This inexpensive natural material can be ground into fine flours, granules, and pits. Olive stone powders have great non-slip qualities when added to flooring.
Coatings
Our wide range of powders and fibres are used in various coatings and paint applications to improve slump and sag resistance. Fibres and powders are particularly effective when used with thick coating films, especially on vertical surfaces. Polyethylene and cellulose flocks also add structure to paint and coating films to give better coverage on corners and sharp angles, as well as improving the viscosity of solvent-based bitumen coatings.
Our products include:
Polyethylene powders are used in many coatings to stop the surface cracking, stretching, peeling off, or getting damaged.
Polypropylene is specially designed for paint, surface coatings, grouts, and epoxy putty to create uniform texture and longevity.
Olive stone is an excellent natural alternative to synthetic materials. This material provides excellent anti-slip and anti-sag properties.
Cotton is another good alternative to synthetic materials. It provides excellent structure and slump-resistance to a variety of coatings.
Milled aramid fibres and flocks provide excellent reinforcement to high-friction products. They are high temperature and wear resistant.
