WOOL
FIBRE

A Natural, Protein-Filled Fibre
Wool fibres are 100 per cent natural and have been used to manufacture textiles for thousands of years, including clothing, furnishings, and carpets. Wool can also be used to create insulation and felting products. The natural fibre is also used to manufacture cosmetics and personal care products, as ground wool can be chemically treated to release natural Keratin.
The unique range of properties that our wool possesses makes it one of the most desirable and irreplaceable materials in the world. The fibre is complex biologically, consisting of proteins that provide outstanding performance properties.
We manufacture high-grade wool that offers more luxurious and moisture-rich finishes in applications. The reason our wool is commonly used for clothing and textile applications is because of its high resilience, meaning that the fibre can return to its original length and structure after compression and stretching. This ensures that fabric products retain their shape and are resistant to wrinkling.
Quality matters, so at Goonvean Fibres, we’ve added further value to our wool fibres, including low impurities and small cuts.
Available in a range of sizes.
Standard Fibre Details
Our quality wool fibres are exceptionally rich in keratin (a natural protein), possess high moisture retention and density, excellent dye affinity, and hold their charge – making them excellent volumizers.
We have Milled Wool Powder that helps to enrich hair products due to its high keratin contents. We also have a High-grade Wool Flock that is popular among cosmetic and personal care product manufacturers due to having similar properties to natural human hair.
Technical Fibre Details
Wool belongs to a group of proteins: Keratins. The fibre has a heterogenous composition, meaning the protein consists of amino acid and acidic carboxyl groups. These are what are responsible for the fibre’s characteristics, such as flexibility, resilience, and elasticity, and are the reason why they absorb moisture and dyes so well.
Wool fibres have low to moderate strength with tenacities of 1-2 g/d (9-18 g/tex) dry and 0.8-1.8 g/d (7-16 g/tex) wet.
Wool doesn’t have a homogeneous structure like cotton and most synthetic fibres. Wool fibres have complex chemical and physical compositions that have changed and evolved historically to protect sheep in extreme weather conditions.
